Windows Phone 7 App Numbers

Windows Phone 7 App Numbers

Microsoft has released new figures for its Windows Phone Marketplace which has now been open for business for one year.

Microsoft reports that over 36,000 people and companies now form its Windows Phone community with another 1200 joining each week.

Windows Phone Marketplace currently lists over 11,500 apps of which 7,500 are paid apps.

"Based on the conversations we are having with some of our developers, many are telling us that they are seeing more revenue on our platform than competing platforms, despite the fact that we cannot yet match the sheer number of handsets being sold," Brian Watson recently wrote for the Windows Phone Developer blog.

Windows marketplace of course lags behind Android Market with its 200K apps and the Apple Store with its 300K apps. However, with the new Nokia and Windows agreement to work jointly on Windows Phone / Nokia smartphones it will be interesting to see what happens over the next 12 months.

1,500 new APIs for Windows Phone 7 developers

Mango will bring 1500 new API’s for developers, including sockets, raw video stream access, background audio, SQL database, motion sensor API with gyroscope support and much much more.
The only API of note missing is in-app purchasing.

Qantas works on Windows Phone 7 check-in app

Qantas is currently developing a new app for Windows Phone 7 handsets that will allow users to check in via an app rather than the web browser on their phone.

The app, creatively titled Qantas for Windows Phone, will let passengers check in to a flight and look up a flight's status directly from the app.
Details are limited at this stage, but according to screenshots provided by Microsoft and Qantas the app also looks set to support GPS-based notification of how far away a passenger is from the terminal and how much time they have to board.
ZDNet Australia contacted Qantas to find out more about the app and when it would be released; however, Qantas had not provided a comment at the time of publication. Microsoft said that the app is "coming soon" to the Windows Phone Marketplace.
The Qantas app news was announced amidst a slew of impending improvements for Microsoft's mobile OS at the MIX11 conference in Las Vegas overnight, including an expansion of the Windows Phone Marketplace to 19 more countries and a streamlining of the app submission process.
The improvements are designed to make the Windows Phone 7 more attractive to developers.
"We're not the first choice for many developers right now - we know that … so we're doing everything we can to give them the best tools," said Brandon Watson, senior director of developer experience for Windows Phone 7.

Skype's on Windows Phone 7 this fall

Microsoft's Joe Belfiore is on stage at MIX11 and he just said the magic words that many WP7 owners have been waiting to hear: Skype will be coming to Windows Phone 7 in the fall. Whether or not that video chat is included comes down to whether or not we can see a WP7 device with a dront-facing camera, but still, VOIP is always nice.

Angry Birds on Windows Phone 7 next month

Angry Birds headed to Windows Phone 7 next month
Rovio and Microsoft have confirmed this week that the blockbuster game 'Angry Birds' is headed to Windows Phone 7 devices on May 25th.
Delayed for legal reasons, the game was originally set for a February launch on the platform.

The game will feature 195 levels and will be available in theXbox Live portion of the app marketplace.

It is unclear if the game will be free or not.

Additionally, Microsoft has expanded the Windows Mobile App Marketplace to 35 countries and has announced major apps like Skype, Layar, Spotify and Amazon will be coming with the "mango" firmware update in September.

No Firefox for windows phone 7

In an interview with OnSoftware, Jay Sullivan, VP of Products at Mozilla basically said they have no version of their browser planned for WP7.  "At the moment we are focusing on Android in terms of the browser.  For those other platforms we may do things like FireFox Home, so you can fire up any browser and get to your FireFox data.  We're not looking to bringing FireFox itself to Windows Phone 7 at this point."

I don't think it matters a whole lot as IE on WP7 is working well and people are now preferring it over many other browsers on different platforms.

Student wins Microsoft WP7 contest with app

Aaron Eastburg, a computer science major, won a student application contest through Microsoft Licensing for his creation of a fun, interactive app for the Windows Phone 7 called “Squid Squish,” which is now available on the Microsoft Marketplace.

Students from the University of Nevada, Reno continue to accomplish great things and Aaron Eastburg is one of those students.
Microsoft Licensing recently held a competition for students to come up with and create an application for the Windows Phone 7 (WP7). Eastburg, a computer science major, enrolled in the competition with the hopes of creating a fun, interactive app.
“I had the idea of making a game, because everyone likes games,” Eastburg said. “I really like the creative side of programming.”
Eastburg’s app was selected as the winner of the competition in February and was announced last month at a large event at the Microsoft Reno headquarters.  He received a WP7 device for the successful design.
Michael McMahon, the computer science adviser and programmer for the University’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering, was excited to see Microsoft offer this competition to students.
“The CSE department was very happy that Microsoft reached out to the students and that so many of them responded with participation,” McMahon said. “This was a wonderful, graphical illustration of how driven some of our students can be, and the cutting-edge software they can develop when given an opportunity.”
Eastburg’s game, Squid Squish, is an underwater-themed slingshot game which has now been published to the Windows Marketplace under the name “Squid Squish Lite.”
“The player uses his thumb to launch squid from a coral or seaweed slingshot at fish and other sea life making sure not to let any get by,” Eastburg said. “There will be a small variety of challenges for the player to complete with a twist in game mechanics for each. It features some really cute graphics and great audio done by my teammates.”
Eastburg was assisted by two teammates from Las Vegas, Hettie Zhang who designed the characters and John Colombo who created the audio.
McMahon believes the user experience provided by this game “stood out above the other applications.”
“Aaron and his team developed the best Windows Phone 7 application of the competing teams,” said McMahon. “Squid Squish showed excellent planning, design and development. The game premise, the graphics, the interaction, the interface itself and the use of touch – everything was brought together very nicely by his application.”
Microsoft's Academic Developer Evangelist for Northern California, Kenny Spade, helped Eastburg’s team prepare the app for market and said he was impressed by the professional quality of the app.
“The first thing that struck me when I saw the screenshots of Squid Squish for the first time is how polished it was,” Spade said. It wasn’t simply an idea that could turn into a great game, but something I would expect to see on the list of top sellers in the Marketplace.”
Spade also said their high-quality work was key in getting the app ready for market.
“When Aaron and I went through the certification process to see what would need to be changed to prepare his game, there was very little left to be done,” he said. “For having never worked with the Windows Phone, never having held a device, and not having published an application, they were more ready to go at the end of this competition than many professional developers I work with.”
Eastburg hopes to continue to create fun computer programs. He hopes his career will allow him to work with both computer programming and art. Squid Squish can be downloaded on any WP7 device from the Windows Marketplace or any computer which has the Zune Marketplace software, simply search the name “Squid Squish Lite.”

MANGO UPDATE WINDOWS PHONE 7 COMING SOON

  • An update on Mango, expected to offer better browsing and improved tools for developers. Part of that improved browsing experience will be due to Internet Explorer 9, which will offer HTML 5 support and hardware acceleration.
  • Multitasking: This will help bring Windows Phone 7 on par with competing operating systems. More importantly, this ends up being a speed improvement. No more waiting for apps to load when switching. Mango will introduce “fast app switching”.
  • Expanded access for developers to camera and motion sensors.
They are expected to showcase a number of apps, including Plants vs Zombies. All in all, it should be a good day for developers. It will be interesting to see if they discuss the still MIA (testing) NoDo update for AT&T phones. More importantly, steps being taken to avoid this from happening when Mango hits. Making users wait for copy and paste is one thing. Mango is a major update, so the heartache will be greater if the delays are anything like what has been experienced with NoDo.

AT&T Windows Phone 7 updates are on the way

Windows Phone 7

According to the latest post on the Windows Team Blog, Windows Phone 7 users on AT&T will have to wait a little longer for their phone’s updates. Apparently the Samsung Focus, LG Quantum and HTC Surround are still having their updates tested – a stage expected to be completed by early April. Since it’s already the 13th now, we’ve almost reached the middle of the month – this means the update should be released soon.

Android 2.3 Gingerbread Ported to HTC HD7!

Our good folks over at the chinese mock off of XDA called XDA.cn have done something really significant once againThey have been playing pretty well with Windows Phone 7 lately and this time they have ported Android 2.3 Ginerbread to HTC HD7! Instead of the bare vanilla version of the Android, they decided to port the Sense 2.1 flavored Android to HD7 and demoed it on video for our viewing pleasure.
Unfortunately we can’t read the texts in the video and the Sense UI 2.1 is all that makes us beleive that it is Gingerbread. We are pretty much hopeful for the release of this ROM which we could flash to our HD7s accompanied by a how-to guide so we are keeping an eye on this

Multitasking demoed on Windows Phone 7 handset

One plucky hacker has been showing off a working demo of true multitasking on a Windows Phone 7 handset. Needless to say, Microsoft isn’t best pleased.
The news comes via Engadget who snapped the video up earlier on today. The hacker who created the Windows Phone 7 multitasking work-a-round is known as Jaxbot and his skills are now showcased in a video you can see at the bottom of the article.
We’ve always said that the fact that Windows Phone 7 lacks multitasking is a bit of a pain.
Granted, the iPhone didn’t get it until the release of the iPhone 4, but not having it on a device in this day and age is pretty rubbish – especially when a company such as Microsoft is the driving force behind it.
At present, the hack is only in ‘demo-mode’ – i.e. just for showing off basically. But we’re extremely impressed with Mr. Jaxbot. The boy certainly has some skills.
Unfortunately, Microsoft doesn’t share our enthusiasm and has been harping on about hackers on its official Windows Phone 7 blog.
The crux of Microsoft’s whinge is this:
Hackers, please leave our operating system alone and be patient while we work on an official multitasking update. Tinkering with the operating system can cause all kinds of ‘unknown’ issues that can affect your phone detrimentally.
This is a fair point. We agree in some respects with Microsoft. After all, the Redmond monster has taken a lot of steps to ensure the platform remains unified and on an even keel, unlike its Android counterpart.
But, you can’t stop ingenuity – that’s just a fact of life. For better, for worse: hackers will always tinker and fortune always favours the brave.
Anyway, here’s the video showcasing multitasking on Windows Phone 7:

Windows Phone 7 App Wall gives developers their inch of fame

Over at the MIX 11 conference, Microsoft has used three sides of a cubicle structure to showcase the developers' hard wrok. Spotted by Long Zheng, the app wall displays thousands of icons from the apps in the Marketplace, and creates a place for developers to spot their own applications. While this is undoubtedly based off of Apple's interactive App Wall from WWDC 2009, it makes for a great decoration and should provide some joy to the developers who find their apps

HTC Sound Enhancer App Review

The free Sound Enhancer App promises to “improve your listening experience with music and video.”  I figured trying a free application is really no big risk, so I installed it.  Sound Enhancer can help those of you looking for an equalizer on your phone- take note, this app is provided by the HTC corporation and is available to HTC phones via the HTC Hub.  For audio and video, it provides Dolby Mobile and SRS Enhancement. For audio only there is an Equalizer with pre-sets for bass, treble, or vocal booster, as well as pre-sets for various genres, like rock, pop, or classical.
I found that the Sound Enhancer really did improve my music-listening.  The touch-screen controls responded fairly quickly when I was jumping around the enhancement choices, meaning there was only a brief pause in the music as I tested out the different options.  I found the enhancements to be fairly accurate, and they really improved my listening- especially with headphones on.  For those of you with HTC phones, you have nothing to lose, and everything to gain by installing this app.
